"The Spreading Tree" was painted in 1901 when the artist and his family were living at Widdington, near Newport in Essex. There are still places in the area with trees and fields exactly as in the picture. The two girls are Meg and Kitty Clausen, the artist's daughters, who appear singly and together in about 30 paintings throughout his career.

This picture was sold at auction in December 2008 for £11,875, slightly below its estimate - the record price for a Clausen is almost £711,000 for The Gleaners (1882)
