A pensioner couple who bought a Victorian oil painting for less than £100 were said to be ''amazed and delighted'' yesterday when it sold at auction for £185,000.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/art/art-news/8069668/100-Victorian-oil-painting-sells-for-185000-at-auction.html
I don't know the artist, John Atkinson Grimshaw, and I don't particularly love the painting, Salthouse Dock Liverpool. But what a great story!! Every collector in the universe would live in hope that one day, a piece in their collection would be identified as a long lost treasure, worth a fortune.
My only experience is exactly the opposite. When the Antique Road Show came to Melbourne, we took our beloved pair of 17th century Dutch paintings to be revealed to a hopefully amazed public. The expert said "I hope you like them because they are only 18th century and not brilliantly done. You won't get all your money back".
I used to buy and sell antiques (particularly books) as a hobby and found both ways. The highest prices I got was for some Biggles first editions!
