John Callcott Horsley - Country Flower Girls

1858
oil on canvas
exhibited at the RA the same year
it was painted as a contrast to another of his paintings showing flower girls in London and shown as a pair Flower-Girls - Town and Country.
Horsley was friends with William Powell Frith and Abraham Solomon and like them, from about the 1850's, painted pictures with allusions to contemporary issues, albeit in an acceptable way to the public of the time.
