Sir David Murray was born January 29, 1849, in Glasgow and died in 1933. Murray, a well-known Scottish artist, painted lively landscapes and seascapes. He was at first a factory employee and then he took evening drawing courses at the Government Art School of Glasgow. After eleven years of administration he devoted himself to an artistic career. He started to exhibit in London, notably at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, and Grosvernor Gallery from 1875. He was named an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881, of the Royal Watercolours Society in 1886, and of the Royal Academy of London in 1891 as well as elected academician in 1905. He exhibited in Paris in 1889 at the Universal Exposition and received a bronze medal. Originally Scottish, that’s where he discovered his source of inspiration in his beginnings, but towards the middle of the 1880s, he was drawn by the landscapes of the South of England. His works are highly esteemed.
