One of the aspects of social life in the late Victorian and the Edwardian era that deserves more attention is physical activity. Certainly people know about cycling and its implications for women, but I think we should be talking about swimming, archery, vigorous walking, horse riding and now tennis.

This lovely painting is more about the social aspects of tennis, but it is an eye opener, isn't it?

Good points, and how civilized it looks!
