What a pleasure it must have been back then. I assume these people were holiday makers and not necessarily local residents. I am also guessing that the buildings across from the beach are guest houses and boarding houses, well placed for sun, sand and swimming.

A question that came up in the last couple of weeks that you may know the answer to, Hermes. When did legislation ensure that workers were paid annual holiday leave? How many weeks did they get?

Thanks Helen,

I share your interest in Victorian seasides. In answer to your question, in the UK:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Holidays_Act_1871

It doesn't mention it but I checked and they were paid.
