Marion Sambourne

1851-1914

Marion Sambourne (née Herapath) married Edward Linley Sambourne, a political cartoonist for the satirical magazine Punch in 1874. The couple had two children Maud (born 1875) and Mawdley (born 1878).

I'd never seen pictures of Marion before, history being rather dominated by their preserved house

and the career of (from 1875, the house was home to) the 'Punch' cartoonist book illustrator and 'photographer' (I wonder if she ever knew about the nude photographs he took ?) Edward Linley Sambourne (1844 - 1910).

Thank you for the link. I loved it. After the death of her mother in 1895 Marion Sambourne packed away two items of clothing in memoriam. From then on, each generation has lovingly preserved the clothing of their maternal ancestors, adding to the collection with items of their own dress.

That is so clever and so thoughtful. Of course they were an aristocrative family and had, presumably, the staff to make it happen. But don't you wish you had kept two of your your grandmother's loveliest outfits and then your mother's.

I only have photographs and some tools of my grandfather. For some reason Linley has been in books I'm reading a lot lately but I was very interested to see pictures of his long-suffering (if she knew?) wife. She was a good friend to many of the artist's wifes in the area and in the little bit can find seems a very decent and kind person.

Have you read
Inventing the Victorians by Matthew Sweet - not as interesting as I thought it might be.
